Job Summary

Serving as the inaugural director of a new unit, this leader will be a champion for living-learning programs ( LLP) at University of Utah. The Director will promote, manage and measure the impact of a living-learning program that hosts over 20 living-learning and theme communities. Reporting to the Executive Director of HRE, this position will advance a collaborative and unrelenting commitment to the student experience. Student Affairs' strategic plan at The University of Utah, Adapting to Student Needs, aspires for The U to be a destination for talented students, faculty and staff. One milestone toward attracting talented students is to offer exceptional living-learning environments for students.

The Director will be responsible for ensuring living-learning programs effectively bridge academic and student life and are grounded in our collective commitment to student well-being. These programs will be exemplary laboratories for students to learn. This staff member will work closely with and provide guidance for program coordinators for living-learning and theme communities. As the inaugural staff member, the director will provide the vision for the expansion of the living-learning program area. It is anticipated that an associate director for this area will be onboarded prior to fall 2024.

The Director will serve on HRE's Senior Leadership Team and will join a talented team of housing professionals who are leading the University of Utah to the next phase of housing growth. The director must cultivate strong relationships with academic units, students, and program directors.

Indicators of the position's success include measurable increases in number of students engaged in LLPs (across all student demographics), evidence of LLPs impact on student's well-being and success, and evidence of deep engagement with program directors and academic units. The director must be able to demonstrate longitudinal programmatic success and strong partnerships with academic programs leading living-learning programs.
Compensation
  • Salary range: $95,000-$105,000
  • Full University benefit plan: Immediate 14.2% University contribution to 401k retirement plan. Health and dental insurance options. 50% tuition reduction after 6 months of employment.

Essential Personnel

This position is an essential personnel position for the department. As such, the individual must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing missions of the University.

Student Affairs is comprised of nearly 20 departments and is focused on supporting student well-being and success with the ultimate goal of assisting students in discovering their passion, people, and purpose. Responsibilities

The Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight for a comprehensive housing program. This position is responsible for the following major areas:

1. Develop partnerships and departmental structure to support living learning communities and other learning focused initiatives

2. Support social justice advocacy and outreach, creating an inclusive community for residents and staff

3. Serve as an ethical steward of financial resources. Develop budget in alignment with long range planning

4. Assessment of initiatives and processes to align with intended outcomes

5. Supporting individual development of students and staff

As a director, this position has responsibility to align strategic direction of their responsible areas, and department as a whole, with the University goals:

The Director is responsible for identifying, researching, evaluating strategic opportunities, and evaluating their fiscal and policy implications.

The Director provides support to advance the success of the entire department. They are a highly visible member of the university community who interacts across divisional lines. The Living-Learning Programs unit works collaboratively with all segments of the university through education, consultation, advisement, and referral (specific entities include Dean of Students office, Living Learning Partners, Undergraduate Studies, Academic Affairs, General Counsel). The Director will serve on department, division, and university committees, as appropriate. This position is also expected to serve as a connection point with colleagues outside of the institution, including Pac-12 (transitioning to Big 12), AIMHO, and ACUHO-I.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Master's degree in Business Administration, or related area preferred.

  • The selected individual must be an educator committed to student success, learning, and inclusion.
  • Experience and understanding of student learning, living-learning programs, and residential college literature is essential.
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field
  • At least eight years of increasingly responsible professional experience in a position that involves thinking strategically, organizing, and managing residential and educational operations in a large, complex university housing department.
  • Should be a collaborative leader, student-centered, self-starter with exceptional communication, writing, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities and take initiative in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues and serve as a representative of the department and division.
  • Experience developing and implementing a dynamic strategic plan.
  • Experience in a Student Affairs area, especially at the director level
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and students in other university departments.
  • Experience leading living-learning communities and/or residential colleges.
  • Experience in programmatic assessment. Supervision experience.
  • Understanding of research, assessment, and evaluation techniques; ability to accurately interpret reported data.
