CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The telecommunication infrastructure at UD consists of both copper and fiber optic cable plants that make up the intra-building and inter-building cabling systems necessary to provide voice, data, and video network connectivity. Connectivity is provided for and between a host of associated electronics devices such as network distribution switches, access layer switches, wireless access points, power injectors, and mini-PBX telephone systems.
Under limited supervision, the Network Technician II installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains a wide variety of data communication systems (inter-building copper and fiber optic cable plants, airplant system, network distribution switches, individual network connections, wireless data networks, telephone circuits, mini PBX telephone systems, building wide structured cabling systems, video connections, and signboards). The incumbent develops and maintains a detailed knowledge of the telecommunications infrastructure which serves the entire University community and maintains accurate documentation of all of his/her work. The work requires a high level of independent judgment in the application of established procedures. The NTII frequently works with tight project deadlines and interfaces with a broad range of people in the University community. Network Technicians in the Network Installation Group report to the Manager of that group.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs inter and intra-building wiring systems (copper and fiber optic cable plants and airplants), communications termination
devices, interface equipment and transmission facilities. - Installs standard and moderately complex data communication equipment and components such as network switches, wireless access points, mini PBX telephone systems, UPS systems,
signboard, Blackboard access system, connector blocks, wiring and cables. - Updates network database and maintains accurate installation and maintenance documentation; Creates and modifies CAD drawings.
- Configures and maintains soft-settings on data communication equipment independently;
- Maintains and recommends purchases to maintain adequate inventory of supplies in vans and designated storage areas.
- Provides ongoing maintenance support for standard and more complex data communication systems.
- Monitors and operates systems to analyze malfunctions which occur during production operations, troubleshoots, and performs necessary corrective actions; Uses work order software to document and resolve reported client problems.
- Interprets drawings, specifications and schematics to repair and modify standard and more
complex data communication systems. - Plans and designs small datacomm projects and manages project work through installation
completion. - May assist in surveying installation areas to determine work methods, tools, materials, etc.
- Works within safety rules and regulation guidelines and quality control standards. Maintains
safety codes. - Ensures that work sites are properly marked for Miss Utility to protect the integrity of network infrastructures.
- Test and certifies that the network meets required installation standards.
- Develops an increasing familiarity with the University's telecommunication infrastructure, basic building intra and inter cabling systems, and telecomm room configuration.
- Maintains level of technical skill and broad awareness of technical developments within the areas of local and wide area networks, wireless technology, fiber optic transmission systems, data transmission standards, and interlintra building wiring standards.
- Keeps abreast of industry standards, recommendations, guidelines, and codes.
- Works on call after hours on a rotating schedule throughout the year.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of an Associate's degree in electronics or equivalent formal military and/or private training and three years of hands-on experience with data communication and communications software. A combination of related education and experience can substitute for required education.
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of analog and digital electronics and their application to the complexity of data communication components and transmission facilities.
- Technical aptitude, fine attention to detail, and ability to interpret specifications and schematics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, capabilities and limitations of standard and more specialized data communications equipment.
- Knowledge of communication software, CAD and excel.
- Attention to detail skills and ability to work independently.
- Ability to interpret schematics.
- Ability to communicate effectively with people having various levels of technical expertise and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of standard trade practices, and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of University practices and procedures, standard trade practices, and safety
rules and regulations. - Knowledge of local, state and national codes that govern the installation of communication systems preferred.
- Experience with advanced features of communications software and knowledge of local, state and national codes that govern the installation of communication systems preferred.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
- Work is typically performed inside and possibly in dusty and dirty areas.
- Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
- Work in confined spaces is performed when required.
- The Network Group is responsible for outside plant telecommunications infrastructure which requires work performed in adverse conditions in outdoor environments.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work requires frequent bending, pulling cables and wires, using hand and power tools and working in awkward positions.
- Technician stands and walks for extended periods and occasionally climbs and works from ladders.
- May require occasional off-hour work, overtime or regularly scheduled on-call status.
- Possession of valid motor vehicle operator's license.
- Must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, equipment weighing 75 pounds
- Must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
