Job Summary

Reporting to the assignment area(s) campus leader, the Learning Commons Associate – Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of one (or more) section(s) of the Learning Commons. The incumbent ensures that the primary focus of all employees in their assigned section is providing excellent customer service that maximizes student success and support. The Managing Associate is responsible for upholding and promoting the mission of the Learning Commons, and the training, supervision, and overall performance of their assigned direct reports.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Performance Requirements*
  • Supports the strategic objectives of Directors and Dean of the Learning Commons
  • Implements training for assigned employees; assists in the creation of training and best practices
  • Designs and implements sound operational policies and procedures for the Learning Commons
  • Evaluates effectiveness of operational policies and procedures
  • Recommends purchases and monitors expenditures for items suited for assigned area(s), including multiple learning labs
  • Develops instructional objectives, plans, and assessment tools for the area of responsibility
  • Maintains inventory records and an accurate accountability for all supplies, materials, equipment, and software computer packages in multiple labs
  • Provides excellent customer service as a primary contact for patrons of the Learning Commons
  • Provides tutoring services as needed in assigned areas
General Supervision and Management

Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates Learning Commons Associates (I, II, and Senior) as well as other employees, potentially including student workers, in the assigned area(s)

Service Excellence
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
  • Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation, creativity, and service to the College
  • Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College
Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the assignment area(s) campus leader

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years' working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • One (1) year's experience supervising (e.g., managing, evaluating the performance of others; leading projects or processes)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • Experience with Computer Science or related field in an instructional support or academic setting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
  • Skilled using Microsoft Windows, the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and using web browsers to access the internet
  • Skilled in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Skilled with coordination by adjusting actions in relation to others' actions
  • Skilled using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Ability to Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
  • Ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Ability to negotiate by bringing others together and trying to reconcile differences
  • Ability to maintain a service orientation by actively looking for ways to help people
  • Ability to manage one's own time and the time of others
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading
Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
