Assistant Professor - Applied Music and Orchestra

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Directs and provides visionary leadership in fostering an innovative university orchestral program
  • Serve as chief facilitator of the Southeast Symphony Society Board
  • Assume administrative duties associated with the Southeast Symphony Orchestra (Grant funding, personnel contracting, liaison to Bedell Hall front and back of house management, programming, advertising, etc.)
  • Teaches in applied music area of expertise (low strings or double reeds preferred)
  • May teach in other areas of music such as chamber music, conducting, music history, music theory, music education, music technology, or other courses as assigned
  • Actively participate in recruitment efforts on- and off-campus
  • Participate in professional growth and service to the University and profession as defined in the Promotion and Tenure Guidelines
  • Maintain visibility in professional organizations related to orchestral conducting, music performance, and/or music education


Required Qualifications


  • Completed doctorate in music required by August 1, 2024 (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government-certified university)
  • Demonstrated record of success in conducting a full symphony orchestra such as youth orchestra, middle/high school orchestra, collegiate orchestra, or regional orchestra.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses
  • Demonstrated record of success in organizing community engagement and outreach programming
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain students
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with regional music educators and the local community
  • Demonstrated success as a performer on your primary instrument
  • Demonstrated peer-reviewed research and/or creative activity
  • Evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through such organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
