Department Information
The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (ODEMA) monitors and promotes Indiana University Northwest’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by the development of programs and activities designed to create awareness around these issues both on campus and within the northwest Indiana community. We monitor this commitment administratively by providing consultation on campus policies; develop co-curricular opportunities to provide professional development for our students; develop diversity trainings and workshops for staff and the community stakeholders; and create programs exploring the dimensions of diversity which make up the rich cultural traditions of our shared communities.
Job Summary
The position of Diversity Specialist will report to the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- In consultation with leadership, plans and coordinates activities to ensure diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion programming goals and objectives are met. This includes organizing office operations in addition to supervising student office assistants in the absence of the director.
- Frequently works collaboratively with campus and community stakeholders to meet unit objectives.
- Serves as a project coordinator for office diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.
- Manages office clerical and fiscal operations.
- Serves as first point of contact with students, faculty, staff & community collaborators.
- Serves on campus wide committees providing input on diversity related concerns.
- Coordinates diversity calendar, creates marketing strategy and promotion of campus diversity related activities.
- Provides leadership and oversight to student office assistants.
General Responsibilities
- In consultation with leadership, develops, designs, and maintains diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion program objectives to support organizational goals.
- Develops communications and serves as liaison to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, and leadership members.
- Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on diversity-related topics, such as cultural understanding, implicit bias, recruitment and retention strategies, inclusive terminology, and team dynamics, to a variety of audiences.
- Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as aresource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
- May serve on various committees and provide input on strategic direction for the department or unit.
- Arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities as necessary.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- 2 years of work experience in a confidential office environment
- 2 years of marketing (including social media) and senior administrator support experience

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Salary Range: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 a year
