Assistant Clinical Professor: School of Nursing

A full nursing faculty member is responsible for the implementation of the nursing curriculum, program evaluation and improvement; supports the philosophy of the School of Nursing (SON), and supports the mission of the College. Nursing faculty share in the budget planning activities, assist in the determination of staffing needs, and provide input to the Dean or Associate Dean on the reappointment and/or promotion of members of the School of Nursing. Specific content needs are requested in medical-surgical nursing and leadership.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Med-surg and leadership content expert
• Potential for Director of LPN to BSN Program
• Develops syllabus and teaching strategies for the assigned course(s) in conjunction with the respective Curriculum Committee.
  • Course description and learning outcomes cannot be changed without approval of the Committee.
  • Changes in textbooks must be discussed with the Committee.
  • Course faculty present a course summary based on the SON End of Course Report (Appendix D) and recommendations for improvement after each semester to the respective Curriculum Committee.
• Participates in ongoing curricular development, implementation, and evaluation within the respective programs.
• Participates in the development and implementation of a systematic evaluation plan for the BSN nursing education programs.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, which are consistent with the policies of the parent institution, or with differences that are justified by the program education outcomes.
• Participates in classroom and clinical teaching and evaluation.
• Serves as a faculty advisor to assigned nursing students to assure students meet professional and degree requirements
• Participates in activities to promote personal and professional growth, maintaining professional competence through practice, continuing education, and professional activities.
• Provides a self-evaluation annually in accordance with College and SON requirements.
• Serves as a professional role model for students.
• Participates in standing and ad hoc committees with the college and the School of Nursing.
• Attends regularly scheduled SON and College faculty meetings.
• Participates in pinning and hooding ceremonies, convocations and commencement exercises.
• Assumes responsibility for serving as course coordinator as appropriate.
• Evaluates each course offering according to the SON End of Course Reports criteria and files in appropriate course book in the School of Nursing
• In general, full and part-time nursing faculty meets both the Elms College Faculty and the School of Nursing requirements.

Faculty Obligations

In accordance with the College Faculty Handbook, full-time teaching faculty members are obligated to 24 credit hours per year or its equivalent.  Any faculty member requesting a reduced teaching load must submit a petition to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  Whenever applicable, the matter of equivalency shall be guided by the formulas set up by professional associations.  Tenure track is available for doctoral prepared candidates.

If a faculty member teaches more than the contracted 24 credit hours per year, he/she is entitled to the following:

• overload compensation, or
• the carry-over of credits toward the contractual obligations of the next semester or academic year, as determined jointly by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and affected faculty members.

Any course taught by a faculty member, whether as part of the traditional, continuing education, online, or weekend schedule fulfills the contractual obligation.

Qualifications/Criteria for Appointment

Minimum of a master’s degree with a major in nursing

Doctoral degree preferred

Clinical experience in a specialty field

Knowledge and experience in baccalaureate nursing education preferred

Recruitment and Selection

Nursing faculty are recruited from advertisements in professional journals, newsletters, or local media sources.  The selection process includes an interview with the Dean, Associate Dean, School of Nursing Faculty Committee appointed by the Dean and Associate Dean, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
