JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the general operation and financial performance of the clinical laboratory to ensure services are delivered in an accurate and timely manner. The operations manager must have a minimal of 5 years' experience, possess problem-solving skills, is responsible for the clinical laboratory's administrative and technical functions and maintaining an in-depth knowledge of quality assurance practices, clinical pathology techniques/methods, principles and instrumentation.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Managing all aspects of the laboratory operations and ensuring that the CEO and Laboratory Director are kept current and informed on all aspects of the laboratory activities that have any direct or indirect impact on financial, customer service, quality, and health/safety.
- Working with the Laboratory Director and CEO as required, manages day-to-day clinical testing, phlebotomy, and reference laboratory problems, providing technical and operational leadership and guidance to all staff.
- Responsible for leveling human resources and material resources to ensure that laboratory activities are performed timely and efficiently within budget.
- Includes staff schedules, equipment, and inventory management. Develops staff scheduling policies to adequately deliver company business objectives in an efficient manner. Maintains a laboratory with adequate inventory levels while anticipating supply needs and ensuring receipt of supplies. Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, troubleshooting procedures, ensuing trained staff, certifying instrument performance, arranging for service/repair.
- Provides recommendations on hiring and advancement.
- Leads and enforces disciplinary actions and terminations.
- Provides effective recommendations on hiring, advancement, departmental orientation and training of personnel.
- Ensures that results are accurately reported out to ordering providers in a timely manner to ensure that established turn-around times are met.
- Maintains the laboratory information system (LIS) by identifying needs and problems, recommending updates/upgrades, establishing priorities, and maintaining security and confidentiality by working with the LIS vendor, Laboratory Director, and CEO.
- Represents the laboratory to clients, peers, and employees in the normal course of business, business development activities, and outreach activities.
- Ensures that company policies are followed and understood by all personnel related to clinical testing, safety, compliance, and delivery within budget.
- Assist with preparing statement of work, requests for proposals, and contracts for current and new clients.
- Identifies in collaboration with the Laboratory Director specific monitors including quality reports, monthly testing volume, and phlebotomy services/performance.
- Responsible for ordering and managing the inventory (supplies and consumables).
- Assist with the development and implementation of new policies and procedures, assays, methods, and instrumentation in collaboration with the Laboratory Director.
- Assess the competency of staff (at time of hire, 6-month, and annually) and document accordingly per CLIA/CAP requirements. Recommends corrective action for staff to Laboratory Director.
- Assists Laboratory Director to prepare for CLIA and CAP inspections and internal mock inspections.
- Ensures compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Control logs, instrument and work environment maintenance logs, test validation and staff training documents per CLIA and CAP requirements with support from the Laboratory Director.
- Serve as Laboratory point of contact for laboratory related questions/concerns with support from the Laboratory Director.
- Reports to CEO and performs other laboratory duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Five years of laboratory leadership experience in a CLIA, CAP, or ISO accredited laboratory.
- Master's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Biological Science.
- Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and occupational health and safety regulatory requirements
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple laboratory projects in a fast-paced, highly technical laboratory environment
- Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Medical Laboratory Scientist, ASCP or equivalent certification.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well with others and independently.
- Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
